This week’s Featured Album: Ilmateade by Duo Ruut

Duo Ruut - Kuuse koht

Estonia’s Duo Ruut’ s second full length album Ilmateade (Weather Report) was released on June 12.

“Almost every song deals with the weather, either directly or metaphorically. In the songs, which are based on traditional Estonian texts, the weather becomes a changing character that has a surprising impact on our everyday lives.” Writes Susanna Poikela in The Baltic Guide. “Ann-Lisett Rebane and Katariina Kivi began working together in 2017. Duo Ruut have toured over 20 countries, and performed at top international festivals. Their music has been featured by KEXP, BBC, Mojo, Songlines, NTS, and The List, among others.”

Ann-Lisett and Katariina are known for their innovative use of their Estonian kannel, which they both play simultaneously. It is a modern, custom-voiced concert kannel, built to their spec, with forty-two strings and chromatic levers. The pair sit facing each other sharing a single instrument while weaving their voices in song.

In a review of Ilmateade, Jude Rogers wrote in The Guardian, “These songs are rhythmically complex and have solid, ancient roots, but fans of ambient, Balearic dreaminess and the softer sides of indie pop and psych-folk will find woozy comforts here.”

Puuluup, another duo from Estonia guest on the album. They each play the talharpa—a northern European bowed lyre which they electrify and loop. Guitarist with the Estonian band “Ewert and The Two Dragons”, Erki Pärnoja plays on “Interlude” while poet EiK 2509 appears on “Enne ööd”.

I have seen Duo Ruut play twice in concert – Tallinn and their official showcase at WOMEX 22 in Lisbon. This weekend they will be playing Glastonbury, June 28 at 3:00 pm. If you get a chance to see them during their tour this year, don’t miss the opportunity.

Votia - Dan Ker - Afrika Festival Hertme 2022

Votia is a Maloya music group from Réunion Island, led by Marie-Claude Philéas Lambert, daughter of the renowned Maloya musician Gramoun Lélé. They carry forward the legacy of Maloya, a musical tradition with roots in African and Malagasy cultures, incorporating polyphonic singing, dynamic percussion, and influences from Indian and African music. Votia's music includes Lambert-Philéas' own compositions as well as pieces from her father's repertoire and her children's work.

Child of the Sun - Birch (Live for Climate Sessions)

Birch, the artistic name of Virginia Soler. Born in 2000 in Vilanova i la Geltrú, in Barcelona province, and raised in a family of musicians, Birch began exploring the world of sound almost before she could walk—surrounded by instruments, cables, and microphones.

Largely self-taught, she has followed an eclectic artistic path, experimenting with orchestral composition, electronic music, alternative pop, folk roots, and self-production. This wide-ranging musical journey has shaped a rich and deeply personal sound universe, where acoustic sensitivity merges with experimental textures and lyrics full of meaning.

But Birch is much more than a melody-maker—she is an artist who sees music as a space for activation, awareness, and transformation. Strongly connected to social movements and especially to environmental activism, her work is deeply rooted in the context of the ongoing ecological and social crisis. Since the beginning, she has sought to craft an artistic language that also functions as a tool for resistance—a space from which to imagine alternative, more livable futures.

With the release of her debut album 'Edge of the Time', Birch establishes herself as a fresh, bold, and essential voice—one that defies labels and breaks molds, offering an authentic, committed, and aesthetically captivating musical proposal.
